"When They Say It Won't Happen In Our Lifetime" - Zine
One of our favorite zines from 2020: "When They Say Liberation Won't Happen In Our Lifetime." Zine is a foldable 8 1/2 in x 11 print copy. Zine is eleven color pages. Original caption from Instagram reads:
Before the COVID-19 pandemic reached Turtle Island we made a trip to Pomo land (now called Armstrong Redwood National Reserve). It had been a long time since we sat and reflected in the forest. As we sat next to these elders who have lived thousands of years, through all manner of pandemics, through floods and fires, through a hundred generations of human evolution, through the first waves of colonization, and who are now living through climate change, we realized there was wisdom in the forest if we’d stop to listen.
We came to the forest holding questions we needed to understand. We wanted to know what should we say to people who tell us that our liberation won’t happen in our lifetime? We began to wonder what is a lifetime to a forest? What must it be like to experience time as a giant sequoia — what confidence or clarity might it inspire to have lived through so much crisis and to have kept inching our way towards light and liberation? What could we learn from these elders about their struggle and how might it help inform ours?
What follows is a reflection on the lessons we took with us that day. We hope you find some solace in them.
